The updated Acer Chromebook Plus 516 GE is one of the largest-screen laptops with the latest AI features available in the ChromeOS lineup.
Released in May, this device replaces the first-generation Acer Chromebook 516 GE. I saw that earlier model primarily because of its 16-inch review unit. But I stopped buying the non-Plus predecessor a few months ago, hoping for something better than the Plus line.
Last year, Google introduced the Chromebook Plus segment to promote a more robust line of ChromeOS laptops with AI features unavailable in the non-Plus lineup. Despite not having the Plus moniker, the Acer Chromebook 516 GE ticked most of my boxes but fell short in build quality and performance.
I was also interested in internal access to Google’s Gemini AI and Chromebook Plus benefits, which provide access to additional exclusive software. The new GE 516 fits the bill. The idea of using a powerful Chromebook for personal and professional use and enhanced gaming capabilities makes this updated laptop a compelling choice.
Worth the Wait
This 16-inch wide-angle graphics array (WQXGA) model features an Intel Core 5 120U processor with Intel graphics, 8GB RAM, and a 256GB PCIe Gen4 SSD.
GE stands for “Gaming Edition” and is inimitable because it offers cloud gaming features with efficient performance. While it lacks an AMD or Nvidia gaming processor, the chip ensures fast game delivery without downtime on cloud gaming servers.
The wait for this updated Chromebook was worth it. I bought this device to complement my work environment with a very flexible and functional ChromeOS laptop with a large screen. Chromebooks rarely have screens larger than 14 inches, so I was closely drawn to the new version.
The Chromebook Plus 516 GE costs $649 and delivers excellent results, providing an impressive upgrade over my other computers, both Linux and Chromebook versions. The laptop’s larger screen, Chromebook Plus moniker, and upgraded performance are hard to find in other Chromebooks at any price point compared to this new device.
Unbeatable Configuration Pluses
Acer’s hardware combination is an excellent balance between price and performance. The high image quality and high pixel density are a big plus. The 516 GE is fast and contented – two critical features considering the number of hours I spend on the computer.
The Acer 516 GE Chromebook Plus has the new Intel Core 5 120U processor, twice as fast as the previous model’s Intel Core i5-1240P. If you’re unfamiliar with Chromebooks, you won’t be put off by the 8GB of built-in storage. ChromeOS is a Chrome-based browser with built-in tools that allow it to function as an operating system, and any RAM does not limit its functionality.
Impressive Audio Quality
I’m very pleased with the significant audio improvements in this device. Four upward-firing speakers, two on either side of the keyboard, deliver the best sound I’ve ever heard on another Chromebook. The focus is on DTS Audio and Smart Amplifier technologies.
The speakers deliver distortion-free sound. The audio components eradicate unwanted vibrations using woofers that disperse force in opposite directions. You don’t get Dolby Atmos, but you won’t miss it either. The stereo speakers deliver loud, reliable volume and excellent sound quality.
Enhanced Display Features
The 16-inch IPS 16:10 QHD 120Hz display offers 350 nits of brightness and a 2560 x 1600 resolution. WQXGA technology is used in high-end screens, and it delivers a higher pixel density and sharper images than the lower 2560 x 1600 resolution.
This panel offers more screen space, detail, and a better viewing experience. It’s also fast, with a 120Hz refresh rate, double the 60Hz of any Chrome laptop.
It’s not a touchscreen, though. That’s just a tiny tradeoff for me. However, many gamers who want to play Android games on this Chrome browser may be unhappy with the lack of touchscreen access.
Since this laptop isn’t a 2-in-1 design, reaching across the clamshell to touch on-screen input isn’t part of my typical computing experience. At least for my use case, if the keyboard doesn’t detach from the deck and fold underneath, I have less need for a touchscreen.
Superior Build Quality
Case quality, keyboard openness, and touchpad travel are the issues that plague lower-end Chrome laptops, tainting their appeal. The Acer 516 GE avoids all three while offering a significant physical upgrade.
The new 3.7-pound model looks stylish in a two-tone black finish. The smudges over the exposed, smooth, shiny, obsidian black metal are my only gripe with the above image. The residue around the edges doesn’t fade quickly.
The aluminum frame is second to none. It feels rough and unstable in the hand and fingers. The RBG design of the keyboard back is also a strong selling point for gamers and office workers. There are several color options and brightness levels available.
This laptop has one HDMI 2.1 port. I would have preferred two, as the second HDMI port helps connect more devices. It has two USB Type-C ports (with DisplayPort and USB charging support), one USB Type-A port, an RJ-45 internet port, and a 3.5mm headphone/speaker jack.
The 10-hour runtime from the 65Wh lithium-ion battery is no exaggeration. I tested a fully charged battery, which lasted 20 minutes of the claimed 10-hour capacity, before running out of juice.
I was pleased with the full HD (1920 x 1080) camera with 1080p video at 60 fps compared to the lower-quality cameras on the standard Chromebook. However, the image quality isn’t as good as the third-party webcams I often use to replace Chromebook video cameras. Transient noise reduction and blue glass lenses produce acceptable results but are useless.
Bottom Line
The Acer Chromebook Plus 516 GE might be one of the best Chromebook Plus options out there. It serves two purposes: a powerful gaming machine and a powerful general-purpose laptop for business and personal use. Add a large external monitor and mouse to create a functional desktop replacement.
This model exceeded my potential for ease of use and performance. Acer added key features beyond those found in the previous model to elevate the Chromebook Plus into a class of its own.
Be careful if you decide to buy this machine. Its previous non-Plus version is still on sale at a very attractive price. Make sure you get the upgraded version by scrutiny these three niceties:
- Model Number: CBG516-2H-59S4.
- Build Date: 2024.
- Chromebook Plus logo on the cover.
Acer plans to offer a second Chromebook Plus 516 GE version with 16GB of RAM, more storage, and color options.
